Founded in 1871 by photographer Emil Römmler and accountant Leopold Erasmus Jonas. The firm systematically produced photographs of cityscapes in Europe and further afield (eg Turkey), sold as cabinet photos and in publications. It went on to produce postcards with these and other themes. The firm prospered in the inter-war years but was destroyed by the raids on Dresden and Russian reparations. Cards are largely views or scenes and range from Hove Parade, Brighton to the Cairo market. Many have the R. & D.J. logo rather than the full name, However as Harold Hoff has pointed out the firm also produced real photo studio shoots with numbered cards in series, as the second example shows.
