Hij werd kunstzinnig gevormd op de Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Sint-Petersburg. Hij was leerling bij Alexej Jegorovich Jegorov.

Karl was actief als (decoratie-, wand- en hof)schilder, aquarellist, tekenaar, kopiist en docent aan de academie.

Van hem zijn figuurstudies, genre-, mythologische-, christelijk-religieuze- en historische voorstellingen, landschappen. literatuurillustraties en portretten bekend.
